Jochtal

Embedded amongst broad meadows and moderately rising flanks lies the mountain township of Vals with the ski area of Jochtal. Here, you will find precisely what one understands by a family friendly ski area: no hubbub, no long paths, uncomplicated access to the winter sports area, and the ski area right in front of your doorstep. If the run up there in the Jochtal is still too steep for the children, then they can give the practise slopes down in the valley a try first. Three ski lifts are available for beginners, or those who “are a bit rusty”.  Three more lifts, including a modern 8-seater cabin car transport the ski enthusiasts in the Jochtal from one piste to the other. New, state-of-the art snowmaking equipment looks after good snow conditions on 19 kilometres of pistes, a new valley run leads directly to the township.

The very sporty ones will find a mountain hiking path up to the famous “Stoanamandl Kreuz“ (Cross of the petrified man) (2.260m). Numerous, idyllically located huts offer a view and atmosphere which you will not be able to forget quickly.

Winter walking path

Valcroce – Rossalm (2,5 km – 45 minutes)
Valcroce – Rossalm (2,5 km – 45 min.) The starting point of this trail is located 2.050 m above sea level at the top station of the cable car S. Andrea – Valcroce. The itinerary has a soft ascension along its whole length for a vertical drop of 150 m. The trail is ideal for the whole family: old or young, on foot or by sleigh. The trail ascends down the south side of the mountain where it is completely exposed to the sun. Furthermore you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites, the peaks of Sass Putia and the Odle (where Reinhold Messner, the famous alpinist, grew up) located on the southeast side. The Rossalm is a beautiful terrace-restaurant that offers Italian and Tyrolean specialities.

Rifugio Sci - Schatzerhütte (3 km – 1 hour)
From the parking lot in the Rifugio Ski area starts the trail to the Schatzerhütte.
It begins with a 1 km long ascension through the woods and opens into an alpine meadow that extends up to the Passo delle Erbe.
The second half of the hike is an easy ascension that is exposed to the sun during most hours of the day. The trail is back dropped with the peaks of the Odle, Sass Putia and the Odle of Eores. You can enjoy scenery that takes your breath away!
This hike ends at the Schatzerhütte, restaurant hut, which is open all winter and serves local specialities. Furthermore you have the possibility to spend a night there – reservation required.

Gitschberg

The winter sports area around the “Gitsch“, as the locals call the beautifully shaped mountain, lies at an ideal altitude of 1.400 to 2.500 meters above Meransen.

Directly on the outskirts of the town, two small drag lifts with a practice run each, offer the best start to an eventful week in the snow. In addition to a narrow forest run, the Gitschberg is characterised by broad, easy to view pistes, which leave everyone enough room for a free run.

Even in peak season there are very few waiting periods at the lifts. The ski terrain offers both experts and beginners plenty of piste fun. The ride on the four-seater chair lift ends directly underneath the peak cross where you can orient yourself quite easily in the beautiful mountain region, thanks to the “360°-Panorama platform.“ The panorama view of more than 500 mountain peaks, which are distributed throughout half of Southern Tyrol, the Dolomites, the Zillertal, Stubaier and Ötztal Alps, will surely remain unforgettable. After completion of the new 8-seater cabin lift “Bergbahn“ in the middle of December 2003, there are now nine lifts and 21 kilometres of optimally prepared pistes available annually from the beginning of December until after Easter. The visits to cosy huts are also a part of the obligatory winter programme at the Gitschberg and with 5 quaint mountain pasture huts and two après ski restaurants/bars you can also train your après ski swing. All those who would like to enjoy skiing at night have the option of the floodlit piste at the Brunner-Lift in Meransen. Those who wish to reach the sunny elevated plateaux of Meransen without an own car, can be carried out from Mühlbach in the cable lift. Another option is the “Snow taxi”: The free of charge transport picks up the guests from the surrounding villages and brings them directly to the valley station of the cabin lift.

Funpark KASER GITSCHBERG

Gitschberg offers the Funpark KASER GITSCHBERG for the spectacular variant of the skiing and snowbording.
